HOME – WELCOME

The Ontario Cereal Industry Research Council (OCIRC) is a not-for-profit organization formed in 2004 with the following objects:

To promote research into cereal grains produced primarily in Ontario and/or used in Ontario for the benefit of the industry

To sponsor research programs and research chairs at accredited universities that will advance the knowledge and application of cereal science to Ontario cereal grains and processing – the only focus of this object has been to establish the Cereal Science and Technology Chair at the University of Guelph in 2007

To encourage cereal science as a career choice for working in the industry and to enhance the skills and expertise of those currently engaged in the industry

To foster innovation to increase the use of Ontario cereal grains for value-added applications in processes and products

To research and communicate the nutritional benefits of cereal grains to consumers and stakeholders

To provide direction on strategic matters and research issues to government

There were seven founding members, representing the entire cereal industry value chain.  They collectively pledged a significant amount of industry dollars and were committed to establishing a strong educational and research program in cereal chemistry to secure the competitiveness and growth of the sector.  Following an international search by the University of Guelph, Dr. Koushik Seetharaman was chosen for the position and joined the University of Guelph’s Department of Food Science in 2007.
